• Tournament: BellSouth Classic
• Course: TPC Sugarloaf, Duluth, Ga.
• Defending Champion: Phil Mickelson
• Purse: $5.3 million

TI’s power ranking for the BellSouth Classic:
1. Phil Mickelson
2. Ben Crane
3. Stewart Cink
4. Retief Goosen
5. Scott McCarron

No question there’s heavy highlighter -- green, probably -- on everyone’s calendar for the first full week of April. That’s Masters Week, the first major of the season, the annual rite of Spring that makes Spring so right in the golf world. But PGA TOUR players look ahead at their own peril. The $5.3 million BellSouth Classic begins Thursday at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga., a couple of miles west of Augusta.

First prize is $954,000 -- a lot of green that can buy any color jacket you want. If anyone doubts that this Atlanta area stop, in its 38th year, isn’t special, just check the roll of champions, which includes Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Larry Nelson and Tom Kite among the old guard. More recent title holders: John Daly, Tiger Woods, David Duval, Retief Goosen and defending champion Phil Mickelson.

Sure, the majors club is nice, but reputations are nothing but enhanced in this fraternity, too. No sense preparing for the next big thing when living large will pay off in the present.

It’s all about your agenda.

Last year: Phil Mickelson won his second BellSouth Classic title by surviving a five-man playoff, the first in nine years, as the PGA TOUR completed its second straight tournament on a Monday -- with regulation ending after 54 holes because of inclement weather. Mickelson poured in a 20-foot birdie putt on the fourth extra hole to defeat Rich Beem. Brandt Jobe, Arjun Atwal, and Jose Maria Olazabal were eliminated earlier in the playoff after the five men completed 54 holes in 8-under-par 208.

How he did it: Mickelson’s all-around game wasn’t particularly sharp, but he took advantage of his birdie chances, converting 16, third most in the field, and posting the fifth best putting average after hitting the green in regulation. He also got a little lucky as Olazabal missed short birdie chances on the final hole of regulation and in the playoff.

Strange but true: Three of the last five winners of the BellSouth Classic – Scott McCarron, Ben Crane and Zach Johnson – didn’t ride that victorious momentum into Augusta National Golf Club the following week. Fact is, they couldn’t, having not qualified for the Masters Tournament.

True but not so strange: Mickelson is the only player in PGA TOUR history to win twice in a calendar year in Atlanta, the 2000 BellSouth Classic and THE TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

If the course could talk: “Chipping and putting impress me more than anything else. And that could be good preparation for that older cousin of mine down the street the following week.”

Worth knowing:

• Davis Love III decided he wasn’t going to sleep on that second-round 83 at THE PLAYERS Championship until he gets to Augusta National Golf Club. Love was a late addition to the field for this week’s BellSouth Classic, where he hasn’t played since missing the cut in 2002. His record at TPC Sugarloaf also includes ties for seventh and 11th.

• Count a refocused and recommitted Joe Durant among the latest to enlist the teaching services of Bryan Mogg, who recently took on Charles Howell III as a client.

• Hale Irwin remains the only back-to-back winner of the BellSouth Classic winning in 1975 and ’77 (the ’76 event was pre-empted for the U.S. Open at nearby Atlanta Athletic Club), but Mickelson might be a good bet to join him with his two wins and third place finish in ’02.

• Duluth resident Stewart Cink has six top-10 finishes and has made the cut in eight of 10 starts near his home course.

• Since New Zealander Bob Charles won the first Atlanta stop in 1967, only two foreign-born players have won in the 36-year tournament history: Goosen, from South Africa, and Canada’s Dave Barr in 1987. Internationals have won six of 13 events this year, including four of the last five.

To play or not to play? The question pertains to this week’s Bellsouth Classic for those players who are scheduled to compete in The Masters next week.

Fine tuning their game at Sugarloaf or at the range is the decision that needs to be made for the majority of the 103 players teeing it up at the season’s first major. It seems to be a split decision for the world’s best at least as 10 of the top 20 in the World Golf Rankings will be teeing it up in Duluth.

However, only two of the top eight players will tee off Thursday - Retief Goosen and defending Bellsouth champion Phil Mickelson. Mickelson won in 2005 on Monday in a five-man playoff which culminated a rain soaked week that forced a 54-hole shortened event. The weather should not be a factor this week for the 144-player field vying for the rather generous $954,000 first place prize.

Mickelson is still searching for his first win of the 2006 season although the year has not been bad as proven by his four top-10 finishes. Mickelson is a two-time winner at the Bellsouth, both coming in playoffs, and has finished 10th or better in six of his eight starts including four top three finishes. He is the odds on favorite this week at 7-1 to capture his third championship.
Retief Goosen is right behind Mickelson at 8-1 and his game looks to be a great shape heading into The Masters. Goosen won this event in 2002 and followed that up with a tie for third in 2003. He finished 22nd in last year’s edition after skipping the event in 2004. He has performed well in his four starts in 2006 with two top five finishes and a tie for 15th at the Ford.
Luke Donald and David Toms are the next closest players at 15-1 and both share some common traits. The pair has gotten off to great starts this season, each picking up a win and each having numerous top tens, Toms with four and Donald with three. Neither Toms nor Donald played at the Bellsouth last year and both come in without a ton of confidence after missing the cut at The Players last week.

Arguably the least confident player this week is Davis Love III, who went from tournament leader last week on Thursday to missing the cut on Friday after a second round 83. It’s a good decision to play here following that debacle as entering The Masters with something other than that 83 will be important. He has not teed it up at Sugarloaf since missing the cut in 2002 but does have seventh and 11th place finishes to his credit.

Love is listed at 20-1 along with Padraig Harrington, who also missed the cut at Sawgrass last week. Harrington did not play this event in 2005 after finishing fourth in 2004 and eighth in 2002. Also in at 20-1 is Chris DiMarco who was forced to withdraw last week at The Players due to a rib injury. He does not have a top 10 in stroke play this season but he does have three top 10s in his last six starts at Sugarloaf.

Usually in these non-star studded events, I like the Field. Without alot of the top guys, players 10-30 (oddswise) aren't much better than the good field entries. IMO

Outstanding stuff man!!!!!! Thanks for the info. Do you work for a news media by any chance? That write up sounds like something I might hear on The Golf Channel.

Most of my preliminary info is copied from professional sources. Can't always name them as they compete with this site sometimes. Once I get it all collected, I find it easier to review the online matchups. PGATour has a great player vs. player comparison tool that I use a lot as well.

What books are people here using for matchups? I am currently using Bowmans and WillHill for all of my golf wagering.

Looking forward to posting some 72 hole picks tomorrow. :thumbsup2:

WillHill has one 3 ball (Round 1 - 18 Hole Matchup) that I feel is a bit of a mismatch. Gonna take it for a unit as Rory Sabbatini and Kaye are just not in the same league as Mr Toms, especially on the first day.

Toms D 2.00
Sabbatini R 2.75
Kaye J 4.20

Bowmans has this matchup for 72 holes that is a solid bet considering Padraig Harrington has run into trouble for the last 2 straight. Zach is well due for a Top 10 finish and this lower level field offers a perfect opportunity for him. Putting a unit on it.

ZACH JOHNSON +105
PADRAIG HARRINGTON -125
